NEW YORK, NY - The cigar made famous during Ken Starr's investigation of former President Clinton's relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky was sold on eBay yesterday for $1.2 million. The cigar - rumored to have been lost since 1998 - was posted on eBay by longtime Hillary Clinton supporter Lanny Davis, stirring speculation that the Clinton campaign is quietly raising funds for a comeback at the Democratic Convention. Clinton strategists deny that allegation.
"We have no knowledge of the cigar or it's current or past whereabouts." said a top Clinton aide, who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity. "Perhaps this is an attempt by Miss Lewinsky to insert herself back into the public arena."
Clinton-era memorabilia have been popular items at on-line markets of late, with surging sales of white house china, furniture and draperies. One particular sofa said to have been in the President's 'private' office recently sold for $85,000. Sales of Ming vases once owned by the Clintons have been particularly brisk.
The cigar, which was accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Miss Lewinsky, was purchased by an unnamed buyer in Little Rock, AK. Very little information has been gathered on the buyer, other than an eBay posting in which he indicated he did not plan to smoke it.
