INGLEWOOD, CA - The Workers World Party today announced plans for their 2008 presidential candidate search. Party officials, seeking a serious showing in the general election after years of relative obscurity, have devised a bold approach to their selection process. In an attempt to capitalize on the surprising popularity of the three remaining major party candidates, officials are seeking an old black woman as their nominee.
"It's unprecedented that a woman and a black man are both doing so well in the national primaries." said John Parker, WWP's 2004 presidential candidate. "And [Republican nominee John McCain's] age doesn't seem to be hurting him at all. We think a candidate who's more diverse than all of them put together would do quite well."
Although party officials have declined to list their possible choices, political experts agree that the front runner would have to be Congresswoman Maxine Waters, whose district contains WWP's California headquarters. "She certainly has the credentials to lead the Workers World Party." said Thurman Kessling, professor of Third Party Political Science at Howyflyl University. "Plus, she's an old black woman."
Looking to diversify the ticket further, WWP will seek a vice presidential candidate who is Jewish, Hispanic, or possibly even a Catholic. "Joe Lieberman would be a real coup." says Kessling. "But since most Hispanics are Catholic, they could kill two birds with one stone."
